IGNITORS is a newly established, student-led rocket team under SOMTECH at Texas A&M University. We are competing in the International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC). This prestigious event challenges student teams to design, build, and launch a rocket carrying a payload of at least 2 kg to a target apogee of 10,000 ft, 30,000 ft, or 45,000 ft. Our team is competing in the 10k COTS category, aiming for an apogee of 10,000 ft using a commercial hybrid propulsion system. (COTS stands for "commercial off-the-shelf" and refers to commercial solid or hybrid rocket engines).
Beyond IREC, our team also focuses on High-Power Rocketry (HPR) certification flights. These certifications (Levels 1, 2, and 3) are essential for students to design, build, and safely launch high-power rockets. We aim to help members earn both Level 1 and Level 2 certifications on the same day by designing rockets that meet the requirements for both.
Designs the rocket’s airframe and structural components, ensuring durability and stability under launch conditions.
Designs and integrates the onboard electronic systems and payload.
Ensures safe retrieval of the rocket post-flight.
Analyzes and predicts aerodynamics, stability, and flight performance of the rocket to ensure an accurate and controlled flight.
Responsible for the design, testing, and integration of our hybrid propulsion system.
As a new team, we are eager to establish ourselves in the competitive rocketry community while gaining hands-on experience with hybrid propulsion systems. Our primary goal this year is to deliver a strong performance at IREC and lay the foundation for future success and growth. Stay tuned for announcements in our discord for when applications open!
